Mets Bark in the Park Event, a Real Thriller for Fans

By Abe Lerner

The New York Mets, embarking (pun definitely intended!)on a path of upgrading the fan experience at the ballpark, recently hosted a Bark in the Park event. Dogs were invited to Citi Field on April 6, 2014, accompanying their pet parents in attendance at the spring matinee versus the Cincinnati Reds. The joy of watching a game together with man’s best friend was further enhanced by a pregame Dog Parade, treating dog owners to a leisurely stroll around the playing field together with their pets. Fans taking advantage of this unique opportunity, entered the stadium through the Bullpen Gate, & were seated in the Pepsi Porch area. Proceeds of the canine admissions, as well as a portion of the human tickets, were allocated towards benefitting the North Shore Animal League America, an organization dedicated to the rescue & adoption of abandoned animals. Additionally, the 1st 500 dogs entering the gates, received a complimentary Mets Travel Pet Bowl.

Cindy, a casual baseball fan, & proud owner of Butchie, proclaimed after the game, “This was the most awesome day of my life. We bonded in such a rad way, that I can’t wait until the Mets do it again.” She added that Anthony Recker is now her favorite player, after observing the Mets backup catcher caress an adorable puppy during the parade.

In today’s environment, when it’s cool to bash anything & everything, the New York Mets organization should be applauded for actually getting it right (or is that Wright, as in David?) They delighted their fan base, excited their pets, & assisted a charity in one sweeping motion. An excellent PR move, driving home the point that they really do care. Kudos to the Mets…

I’d suggest though going forward, running a promotion geared towards cat owners as well. Perhaps they can call it, “Cat At Bat”…
